Woody & Miki Martin - 2020-21 HPU Sports Alumni of the Year

Woody & Miki Martin HPU Sports Alumni of the YearWoody and Miki Martin have dedicated their lives to the service of others and Christ. This is reflected in their careers and their commitment and support of Howard Payne and Howard Payne athletics.

Attending Howard Payne in the late 1970s, both were active members of Jackets for Jesus and played intramural sports while at HPU.

Miki was a setter on the 1976 through 1979 HPU volleyball teams. Woody came to HPU one year later than Miki and played football for the Yellow Jackets from 1977-1979.

Later, they would return to HPU to work as dorm directors in Thomas Taylor Hall while Woody was also serving as a graduate assistant coach with the football team. Miki was the head coach of the Lady Jacket volleyball team for the 1988 season, leading them to a share of the 1988 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) Volleyball Championship.

After serving at HPU, the Martins continued in successful careers in education and administration. Woody worked as a coach at Rosebud-Lott, First Baptist Academy-Dallas, Groesbeck, Dalhart, Midland Athens, and Van Alystne and later becoming an administrator serving at Granbury ISD, Tolar ISD, and San Saba ISD.

Woody and Miki always want people to know, “Our sole purpose in life is to exalt Jesus and be about the work of his kingdom.”
