
The 1990-91 Howard Payne University women’s tennis team has set itself apart as one of the best in school history.
Under the direction of head coach Lance Drake, HPU posted a 12-4 overall record and a 9-1 record in Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) play, the HPU women won the 1991 TIAA women’s tennis co-championship.
Making the championship possible was the Lady Jackets defeating Tarleton State University for the first time in school history. It was also the first loss for Tarleton State in TIAA action ever.
The strength of the women’s team was its depth. Every player on the ladder posted a winning record in singles and doubles action.
At the end of the season, Lisa Engelke and Gayla Fortner received First-Team All-TIAA honors. Five Lady Jackets were honored as Academic All-Conference: Amy Engelke, Lisa Engelke, Gayla Fortner, Hilary Johnson, and Gayla Patty.
