Morgen Walker - 2022 HPU Sports Alumni Coach of the Year

Morgen Walker ACOYMorgan had lots of success as a high school player and student-athlete at Howard Payne University. However, he has been even more successful as a coach teaching the sport he loves at the highest levels of high school.

Morgan was a single finalist in Singles at the UIL State Tournament in 1988, he attended Howard Payne University where he would go on to be selected four times as an All-TIAA (Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association) honoree and twice was named the TIAA Most Valuable Player. He helped guide the Yellow Jackets to a TIAA championship and a national tournament appearance in 1991.

Morgan started his coaching career at Andrew Middle School after graduation from Howard Payne in 1993. Later, he also served as a high school assistant coach working under the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) Hall of Famer, Novice Kniffen.

He would go on to lead the Andrews program as the head coach for five years before taking the head job at Plano West Senior High School. Morgan has been at Plano West for the past 20 years. His accolades are numerous but not limited to the following: He has won 22 consecutive district championships, 20 regional championships, 7-5A state semifinalists, 1-5A finalists, 3-5A state championship titles, 2-6A semifinalists, 3-6A finalists, and 2-6A state championship titles.

He coached individual players to achieve various titles. 5A single champion in 2003, 5A state champion in doubles, 2008, 2009, 2014, and 6A state champions 2018, 2019, and 2022. There are many more semifinalist and finalist appearances but are too numerous to mention.

Morgan has been named district coach of the year 10 times, Texas Tennis Coaches Association Middle School Coach of the Year in 1996, Texas Tennis Coach Association 5A Coach of the Year in 2007, NFHS Regional Coach of the Year in 2007, Texas Tennis Coaching Association Coach of the Year in 2021. He has been featured twice by Southwest Sports Television Broadcast. He reached the coaching milestone of 500 wins in 2021, which has only been accomplished by a handful of coaches.
