RICHARDSON, Texas –– Howard Payne's Blake Shaffer, Jenna Middleton, Lane Wakefield, Susanna Maxvill, and Nate Alger were named to the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team in their respective American Southwest Conference spring sport, the ASC office announced on Tuesday.
Overall, 68 student-athletes from ASC baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track and field teams were named to the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team.
BASEBALL - Blake Shaffer JR Exercise and Sport Science Brownwood, Texas
After transferring to Howard Payne from Cisco JC, Blake was named HM All-conference at 1st base in 2007. Playing in 35 games this season, Shaffer was second on the team in hitting with a .360 avg.
SOFTBALL - Jenna Middleton JR Political Science Katy, Texas
Jenna Middleton has been one of the few Howard Payne athletes that has excelled on the field and in HPU's prestigious Douglas McArthur Academy of freedom Honors Program. This season she was named 2nd team All-West Division at a pitcher as well as being a part of the HPU's Dean's and President's Lists.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD - Lane Wakefield SO Business Waco, Texas
Lane Wakefield was a member of the Howard Payne football team were he was also named academic all-conference. Lane had been on the HPU Dean's List and actively involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Government, and the Student Activities Council. Lane was also the Yellow Jackets award winner for men's track and field this season.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD/ WOMEN'S TENNIS - Susanna Maxvill SR Psychology Richardson, Texas
After transferring to Howard Payne from Texas Women's University when Howard Payne started soccer, Susanna Maxvill has been involved in almost every aspect of Howard Payne. Maxvill not only played soccer but has participated in women's track for two seasons and women's tennis for one. She has maintained a 3.77 GPA while being involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and volunteering time in the community in many different areas.
MEN'S TENNIS - Nate Alger Howard Payne JR Finance West Bridgewater, Mass
Nate has been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Phi Kappa Chi, Beta Phi, and the Student Activities Council. This season Nate was named HM All-West Division in tennis. He is also been named twice Academic All-conference.
The honor, in its first academic year, recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the Sports Information Directors from the conference's 15 member institutions vote on a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete from each sport.
All honorees were named to the Spring 2008 ASC Academic All-Conference Team.
