Men's Tennis At ASC Single/Double Tournament

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's tennis team had a strong showing at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Individual and Doubles Championships.

HPU's Edward Martinez made all the way to the flight one finals losing to Joshua Chavez of UT-Tyler 6-3, 6-0. Jeff Toyne dropped two matches to Gavin Ybarra of Hardin-Simmons and Antonio Alda of UT-Dallas.

Raymond Borjas defeated Edgar Lazcano of Sul Ross State 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Will Summers of UMHB 7-5, 6-1 in flight three.

In flight four, Luis Vallecillo defeated Sam Quintana of Sul Ross State and then lost to Sean Strehlow of Hardin-Simmons in the quarterfinal round.

Skyler Turpin lost in the opening round of flight five 7-5, 6-3 to Josh Millet of LeTourneau. In the consolation bracket he fell to Shannon Ladd of UT-Dallas

Carlo Florez lost to Howard Summers of Mississippi College in the first round of flight six. He then defeated Mitch Hallum of UMHB 6-2, 6-2 to reach the consolation finals. He lost in the finals to Ben Albers of LeTourneau 7-5, 6-3.

Ryan Prather made it to the quarterfinals of flight seven, Johnny Aceves lost in the opening round of flight eight, and Mason Thornton made it to the consolation semifinal round of flight nine.

The doubles team of Prather and Toyne lost in the quarterfinal round of #1 doubles as well as Borjas and Vallecillo in #2 doubles, Flores and Turpin in #3 doubles, and Aceves and Thorton in #4 doubles.

The Jackets will be at the ITA Southwest Regional Individuals and Doubles September 30th - October 3rd in San Antonio, Texas.
