Jackets End Losing Streak with 12-5 Victory

BROWNWOOD, TX…Doug Wren's (Arlington, TX/Tyler JC) 4-for-4 performance, a homerun shy of the cycle, helped lead the Howard Payne baseball team (6-12/0-6 ASC-West) past ASC-East foe University of Texas at Dallas 12-5 in the first game of their Tuesday non-conference double header. This win snapped a six game losing streak. The tables would turn in the second game with UT-Dallas winning 9-1.

Colby Rowley (Clyde, TX/CHS) pitched a complete game (seven innings) to pick up the win for HPU. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits while throwing 11 ground ball outs and striking out four Comets.

Wren led HPU with four RBIs. Ryan Kunz (Galveston, TX/GHS) had three hits and two runs batted in.

Cole Ramsey (Academy, TX/Wayland) and Wren each scored three times along with each legging out a triple. Eight Yellow Jackets crossed the plate and pounded out a hit in game one. HPU had 18 hits in the game.

Game two was a different story for HPU as they lost 9-1. Gilbert Curiel (Corpus Christi, TX/WTAM), Lee Morrison (San Angelo, TX/Lake View HS) and Wren each went 2-for-3.

Freshman, Logan Nelson (Bedford, TX/Trinity HS) started for HPU, pitching four innings for the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits in the 18 batters he faced.

The Jackets' bullpen of Justin Bowen (Silsbee, TX/Ranger JC), Chad Schreiber (Windthorst, TX/WHS), Adam Garcia (Charlotte, TX/CHS) and Kelly Henderson (Arlington, TX/Tyler JC) finished the game allowing the other six runs and seven hits.

HPU will host Schreiner University this weekend. Usually weekend series are scheduled for a nine inning game on Friday and seven inning and nine innings double header on Saturday, but due to the Easter holiday the games will be moved to Thursday and Friday.
