Jackets Split With Mountaineers and Take Series 2-1

BROWNWOOD, TX…The Howard Payne baseball team (8-13/2-7 ASC-West) lost the opening game of Saturday's double header against Schreiner 11-5 but rebounded to take game the second 7-5. Doug Wren (Arlington, TX/Tyler JC) pitched HPU to the victory throwing nine innings allowing four earned runs on 10 hits.

Josh Holmes (Brownwood, TX/BHS) started game one, throwing three and two-thirds innings allowing six runs on seven hits. Logan Nelson (Bedford, TX/Trinity HS) came in to relieve Homles. Nelson pitched three innings allowing four runs on five hits.

Gilbert Curiel (Corpus Christi, TX/WTAM) scored the first run for the Jackets in the bottom of the first on a Lee Morrison (San Angelo, TX/Lake View HS) fielder's choice.

Morrison would score in the fourth inning on an Erik Edwards (Sugar Land, TX/McClennan JC). HPU would score the bulk of their runs in the sixth inning when Morrison, Wren and Cole Ramsey (Academy, TX/Wayland) eached scored to pull HPU within three runs.

The Mountaineers would fire back to score three in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 11-5.

In the second game, HPU jumped on the board early, scoring six runs in the first four innings. Three Jackets would cross home plate in the third to give HPU a 5-1 lead. HPU would hang on for the 7-5 victory.

HPU will travel to face Paul Quinn College on Tuesday to make up a double header that was cancelled due to inclement weather.
