BROWNWOOD, TX…In their first season to field a baseball team the Angelo State Rams (21-19) shut down the Yellow Jacket bats taking a 12-0, two-hit, decision last night at Foster Field. The Rams compete in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference and are currently ranked third in the South Division.
Kyle Gibson and Ryan Mulle combined to throw six no-hit innings for the Rams.
In the top of the eighth inning, Lee Morrison's (San Angelo, TX/Lake View HS) single through the right side of the infield broke up the no-hitter. A Joel Garcia (Clute, TX/Ranger JC) would follow with a walk to move Morrison into scoring position with Ryan Kunz (Galveston, TX/GHS) at the plate. Kunz would single down the right field line to load the bases. Jose Sierra (New Braunfels, TX/NHS) would ground into a double play to end the inning.
The Rams would allow seven base runners all game long.
ASU would led the game off with a double and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to give them an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
A three hit, three run third inning for ASU would break the game open and give the Rams the momentum needed to win the game.
HPU will host ASC-West foe Sul Ross State this weekend. Friday's game begins at 1:00 pm at Don Shepard Park. Saturday's double header begins at 12 noon and will feature a special presentation for all the Yellow Jacket seniors.
