HPU Falls To Rival HSU 42-23

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets second quarter comeback came up short as the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys put up 539 yards of total offense on their way to the 42-23 victory at Gordon Wood Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Hardin-Simmons scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter before the Yellow Jackets were able to score with 24 seconds remaining in the first. Sr. QB Adam Johnson (Coppell) hit Sr. WR Chris Jackson (Dallas) in the endzone for a 7 yards TD.

HSU scored again on a one yard run with 8 minutes before half. With 5:43 in the second, HPU's Johnson had a 8 yard run into the endzone to bring the score to 28-13 HSU, HPU Bullard's extra point was no good.

HPU scored again 3 minutes later on a 9 yard TD pass from Johnson to Sr. WR Brandon Tolbert(Austin), the halftime score 28-20 HSU.

In the third, HPU scored first on a 25 yard field goal by Jordon Bullard, 28-23 HSU. That was all the points HPU got from there as HSU added two more TD's in the game to win 42-23.

HPU's Johnson was 23 of 42 passing for 250 yards and 2 TD's, he also rushed for one. Chris Jackson led the HPU receivers with 87 yards on 6 catches and one TD.

HSU's Will Galusha had 107 yards receiving on 8 catches and running back Quinton Jones gained 174 yards on 24 carries with 2 TD's.

The Yellow Jackets will be on the road next Saturday at Louisiana College, it will be a 4:00 pm start.
