BROWNWOOD, Texas - The #18 Howard Payne women's basketball team held visiting #22 Trinity University Lady Tigers to just 26.9% shooting from the field to win their season opener 76-45 Friday night in the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers could not stop HPU's preseason All-American Meia Daniels (Fort Worth), who led all scorers with 27 points. Daniels was 4 of 5 from the 3-point line with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
HPU controlled the game from the start jumping out to a 7-0 lead. They never looked back from there going into the lockeroom with a 45-29 lead.
The second half was more of the same. The Lady Jacket defense allowed them to build a 20+ lead with around 8 minutes to play in the game.
There was a 40+ minute delay in the second half of the ballgame. An official suffered a seizure and was taken to the hospital.
Play did continue and the Lady Jackets went on to win 76-45.
Two other Lady Jackets scored in double-digits - Sr Guard Heather Hohertz (Priddy) with 13 and 4 steals, and Fr. Center Sarah Jockers (Boerne) with 10 and 7 rebounds.
Trinity was led by Maghan Scholbe's 9 points. Genevieve Hurlbutt had a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Howard Payne women's team will conference play next week as they travel to Clarksville, Arkansas to take on University of the Ozarks at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25.
