BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne used thirteen first quarter points to coast to a 30-15 victory over the Choctaws of Mississippi College Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
The Jackets scored on their oppenning drive when Adam Johnson (Coppell) connected with WR David Guerrero (Midland) on a 7 yard TD pass capping an eleven play 80 yard drive, 7-0 HPU.
HPU scored again just 5 minutes later on a 22 yard pass to Chris Jackson from Johnson. The Jordan Bullard (Robinson) kick was blocked, 13-0 HPU.
HPU's Bullard added a 32 yard field goal with just one second remaining before the half, 16-0 HPU.
Mississippi College was able to pull within 8 points with 12:30 left to play in the game when MC's James returned a blocked HPU field goal attempt 99 yards for a TD. That was as close as MC got as the Jackets added another score to take the game 30-15.
Senior WR Chris Jackson caught seven passes for 124 yards and 2 TD's. Senior QB Adam Johnson connected with three different receivers on four TD's throwing for 316 yards on 27 of 41 passing. Freshman RB Jamal Organ (Brownwood) had a career high 135 yards on 15 carries.
LB Mark Jimenez (Marlin) led the Jackets with 6 total tackles (2 solo, 8 assisted).
The Yellow Jackets improve to 5-4 on the season, while MC falls to 4-5 overall.
Howard Payne will wrapup their season next Saturday on the road versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 2:00pm.
