Jackets split against Trinity

Brownwood, Texas - The Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets opened their 2006 campaign with a split of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday with the Trinity University Tigers at Don Shepard Park.

Trinity, which also opened its season, lost the first game 4-3 and the Tigers took the second 16-3.

In the opener, the Jackets jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Trinity scored one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. The Tigers had two players on base in the ninth inning when the game ended, Trinity started off strong in the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning and two in the second, to take a 7-1 lead. A four-run sixth inning had the Howard Payne down 11-1.

1st baseman Andrew Atwell led the Jackets in hitting with 3 hits, 2 RBI's, scoring twice, on eight at bats. Pitcher Justin Davies started the first game of the double header and pitched solid giving up only 2 runs on five hits in five innings pitched.

The Yellow Jackets will be on the road this next Friday in Dallas verses William Jewell, start time in the double headed is 10:00 am.
