Tornados sweep past the Yellow Jackets

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Yellow Jackets play tough but can not avoid the Tornado sweep as Concordia University at Austin wins, 12-5, 4-3, and 7-5 this weekend at Don Shepard Park in Brownwood.

In game one on Friday, Blake Shafer scored the game's first run for HPU in the second inning, reaching on a double and then scoring on an RBI single by Cale Thompson. The Tornados did not score until the fifth when a sacrifice fly by Stephen Szkotak brought home Bryan Jacobs to even the score at one apiece.

In the sixth Concordia scored three runs on three HPU miscues to move the CUA lead to 4-1 after five and a half innings of play. The Tornados threatened again in the eighth, and tallied five runs on six hits.

The Yellow Jackets mounted a rally in their half of the eighth scoring two runs to narrow the Tornados margin. Chris Pucci led off the frame with a single to right field and then scored on Jose Sierra's double to left to spark the rally. Doug Wren added the second tally scoring on an RBI single by Andrew Atwell, after reaching on a walk. Concordia recorded three more runs in the ninth,  to push the CUA lead to 12-3.

Howard Payne rallied again in the final frame, tallying two runs on hits by Shaffer and Ryan Kunz, but it was not enough as the Yellow Jackets fell 12-5.

Smith earned the victory for CUA, working 7.2 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs and striking out seven HPU batters. Justin Davies took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after giving up ten hits and seven runs in 7.0 innings of action.

In the double header games on Saturday, game one was close as CUA scored all their runs in the first three innings, leading 4-0. In the bottom of the 4th the Jackets got on the board scoring two runs on a sac fly ball by Ryan Kunz to score Blake Shaffer, and Michael Harrison's double scored Ricky Gomez. HPU added another run in the next inning on Andrew Atwell's sac fly ball to score Kasey Black.

The score would remain 4-3 CUA the rest of the game. Dougless picked up the win for CUA pitching four innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. Doug Wren got the loss for the Jackets pitching 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits.

Game two of the double header, the Tornados jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the end of second. HPU did pick up a run in the 4th on a Chris Pucci single scoring Cale Thompson.

HPU gave up three more runs in the top of the 7th, but the Jackets scored again in the bottom of the inning Chris Pucci scored fielders choice from 3rd base, 7-4 CUA. The Jackets rallied in the bottom of the ninth loading the bases, but three consecutive Jacket batters strikeout ending the game.

Ethan Morrison got the win for CUA, and HPU's Colby Rowley got the loss giving up 4 runs on 10 hits in 6 innings.
