HPU with another sweep on the season

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State Lobo's were overtaken by the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets as they sweep the Lobos this weekend at Kokernot Field in Alpine.

On Friday, in game one of the three game series, Howard Payne and Sul Ross put up a combined 28 hits as HPU took the 8-4 conference win.

The Jackets put up a 7-1 margin after the first 3 innings of play. Howard Payne held the Lobos to 2 runs in Sul Ross's last at-bat for the 8-4 final.

HPU's Justin Davies got the win for the Jackets throwing 7 innings, giving up 11 hits and 2 runs. Sul Ross's Harvey Cardiel picked up the loss after working 4 complete.

Saturday's climate treated the spectators to clear skies and soothing breezes until the wind blew in a plague of Yellow Jackets from Brownwood. HPU dropped Sul Ross in 2 games on Saturday by scores of 11-1 and 10-7.

The Jackets displayed plenty of plate punch out hitting the Lobos 12-4 in game 1.

The game was tied at one apiece in the bottom of the second, but Howard Payne never looked back as they mounted a 10-run assault over the next four innings for the 11-1 final.

Howard Payne's Doug Wren got the win, pitching five innings giving up only one run on four hits. Sul Ross's Jaime Rojo took the loss in game 1 on Saturday after throwing 5 complete.

Sul Ross turned the tables in the hitting department with 15 hits in game 2 on Saturday compared to HPU's 13. But a 4-1 error margin crippled the Sul Ross Lobos' defensive effort.

The Jackets struck first in the second with a 2-run outing to take a 2-0 lead heading into the Lobo second. Sul Ross scored on a fielder's choice to pull within 1, trailing 2-1 after two innings.

HPU answered with their next at-bat with a 2-run, 2-hit outing as the Jackets spread the gap 4-1. Both teams would then tally a 6-6 margin as HPU took the 10-7 final.

The Jackets' Colby Rowley got the win throwing six and two-thirds, giving up 6 runs on 12 hits. SRSU's Jerrod Solis takes the loss after 6 complete innings on the mound.
