BROWNWOOD, Texas - HPU's Johnson and Tolbert connect for three touchdowns to led the Yellow Jackets to a 24-17 win over East Texas Baptist at Gordon Wood Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jacket defense played solid again holding the Tigers of East Texas Baptist to 222 yards of total offense. The HPU defense was down two starters with Jr. LB Landon Dyer (Bangs) and Jr. CB Todd Loggains (Copperas Cove) were out with injuries.
After slow start for the HPU offense in game one of the season Sr. QB Adam Johnson (Coppell) passes 50 times completing 32 for 306 yards and three TD's. All three of Johnson's TD passes were to Sr. WR Brandon Tolbert (Austin) who had 7 catches for 132 yards. Tolbert caught TD passes of 19, 34, and 53.
HPU DE Marcus Hart (Dallas) led the team in tackles with 7 (6 solo, 2 assisted). He also had 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble.
The bright spots for East Texas Baptist were QB Van Cleave who came off the bench to pass for 158 yards and one TD. Defensively, ETBU was led by Jackson with 9 tackles (3 solo, 12 assisted).
The Yellow Jackets play next Saturday at 1:30 pm versus Paul Quinn College at the Jesse Owens Sports Complex in Dallas.
