SEGUIN, Texas – Howard Payne QB Jason Lavvorn accounts for 6 TD's (5 passing and one run) but the Yellow Jackets lose their 5th consecutive game of the season in a 48-55 nail-biter to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs Saturday at Jack Taylor Field.
HPU QB Jason Lavvorn threw for a career high 500 yards and 5 TD's. He was 19 of 33 passing and also rushed for 21 yards and a TD.
Texas Lutheran scored the first two TD's of the game (13 yard pass, 4 yard run) and had a 14-0 lead with 5:19 to play in the first period.
HPU got one the scoreboard on a 39 yard Jason Lavvorn pass to Nice Sellars with 4:19 to play in the 1st. Jackets tied the game at 14-14 on a 15 yard Jason Lavvorn pass to Genoa Dill at 14:52 in the 2nd.
Both teams traded touchdowns after that with HPU taking a 28-27 halftime lead. With both teams trading score back and forth, Texas Lutheran was able to take a 40-35 lead with 14:02 to play in the 4th.
HPU tied the game at 48-48 with 1:32 to play in the game on an 18 yard pass from Lavvorn to Zach Howard. Howard finished the game with 6 receptions for 149 yards and 1TD.
Texas Lutheran was able to match down the field and with 27 seconds left to play. TLU QB Bryant Villa found Jerry Clouse in the endzone on a 27 yard pass for the game winner.
HPU receiver Jordan Beard finished the game 4 receptions for 150 yards. Free-safety Zach Dauer had a career and game high 10 tackles in the game followed closely by corner back Kasey Black with 9 and 2 breakups, and linebacker Mark Jimenez with 8 tackles (2 for loss) and 1 sack. Corner back Ricky Austin also had 5 tackles, an interception, and 4 pass breakups.
TLU QB Bryant Villa was 22 of 45 passing for 287 yards and four TD's. Anthony Smith was the top rusher for TLU with 23 carries for 98 yards.
Howard Payne fell to 0-5 and to 0-3 in the ASC. HPU has lost its last four games by a combined 18 points.
Texas Lutheran improved to 1-5 overall and to 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference.
Howard Payne will play at home next week against visiting McMurry University at Gordon Wood Stadium. It will be a 1:00 PM kickoff time.
