HPU with second sweep of the year, taking three straight

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not find enough offense to overcome the bats of Howard Payne University Friday and Saturday in Brownwood at Don Shepard Park. HPU sweeps UMHB in the three game series- 12-7, 11-3, 12-9. The Yellow Jackets improve to 9-9 overall and 3-0 in the ASC with the victories.

 In the single game on Friday, Andrew Atwell's RBI single gave HPU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the Yellow Jackets stretched it to 5-0 with a four-run second inning. The Crusaders stormed back with four runs in the top of the third. HPU added a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Cru tied the game with two runs in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets scored four in the bottom of the sixth with two of the runs scoring on an Atwell home run to make it 10-6. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 12-6 before R.B. Garza scored on an error in the top of the eighth to provide the final run for UMHB. HPU won 12-7. Steven Havard took the loss for UMHB to fall to 0-1 on the season while Justin Davies earned the win for HPU to raise his record to 1-0. Atwell was 3-5 with four RBI for HPU and Blake Shaffer also had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.

In game one on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead 11-0 and held on for the 11-3 win. HPU scored three in the first, one in the fourth and seven in the fifth to take control of the game. UMHB got on the board with Kyle Grimes' RBI double in the sixth and added two more runs on Adam Froeschl's two-run single in the seventh. T.J. McKnight took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-3 on the season.  Doug Wren and Andrew Atwell both had three hits apiece for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets jumped on the Cursanders 9-0 in game two before a late comeback fell short by UMHB in the 12-9 HPU win. The Yellow Jackets scored four in the first, three in the second and two in the third before UMHB finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth. HPU added a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-6, but UMHB cut it to 10-8 with two more runs in the top of the sixth. HPU held on for the 12-9 victory. Beyrand took the loss for UMHB to fall to 1-2 on the year.  Kasey Black had three hits for Howard Payne.
