Jackets Get 3-game Sweep Over Schreiner

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Mountaineers of Schreiner University on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets won 5-3, 14-3, 5-3.

The Jackets got it all started on Friday as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead at the end of the second. A solid pitching showing by HPU senior Justin Davies led the Jackets to the 5-3 victory. Davies pitched all nine innings giving up 9 hits and 3 runs (1 earned). He struck-out 10 batters and walked none.

In game one on Saturday, the HPU offense carried the load scoring 14 runs on 14 hits. Josh Holmes got the win for the Jackets throwing 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up only 1 run on 5 hits. Blake Shaffer and Cale Thompson both hit home runs for the Jackets in the game.

Game two was the only game in which the Jackets were down in the series. Schreiner maintained a 1 run lead most of the game before the HPU offense came alive scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain a 3-2 lead. HPU added two more runs in the seventh to go on to win 5-3. Colby Rowley got the win for the Jackets giving up 2 runs on 8 hits.
