Jackets Drop 2nd OT Game Of The Season

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Yellow Jacket football team came back from 11 points down but fell in overtime 31-34 to Sul Ross State at Gordon Wood Stadium on Saturday.

The Jackets got on the board first on a 63 yd Jonathan Haddock pass to Geona Dill with 4:30 left in the 1st quarter.

Sul Ross scored next on a 37 yd TD pass to make it 7-7.

With 1:08 left in the first HPU's Jordan Bullard hit a 34 yard field goal to give the Jackets a 10-7 halftime lead.

At 8 minutes in the 3rd, HPU added to their lead on a 8 yd TD reception by Jordan Beard from Jonathan Haddock to make it 17-10. It topped off a 15 play 72 yard drive.

Sul Ross came storming back with big plays. They scored on 42 yd pass, a 72 yd run, and a 74 yd pass all it the 3rd to make it 17-28 Sul Ross.

HPU made a comeback of their own scoring on a 4 yd run by Zach McGuire and a 27 yd TD pass by Jonathan Haddock to Jordan Beard to give HPU a 31-28 lead.

Sul Ross drove down the field and was able to hit a 36 yd field goal to tie the game  at 31 all and send it to overtime.

Neither team could score on their first attempt in OT. HPU failed to score on their second attempt and Sul Ross' Mike Van Wagner hit a 36 yd field goal to win the game.

The big story of the day was if 59 year old Sul Ross State football player Mike Flint would see time on the field and become the oldest person to ever play college football. Mike Flint has be recovering from an injury earlier in the season and did not see action against Howard Payne.

Howard Payne will travel next week to Seguin to take on Texas Lutheran University.
