Jackets Top McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – Howard Payne's Tre Mason had three TD catches and 152 yards receiving to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 45-33 win over McMurry University in American Southwest Conference action Saturday night. 

HPU quarterback Zach Hubbard was 21 of 31 passing for 337 yards and 3 TD's. Hubbard was perfect on the day till the 10:00 mark of the 3rd quarter throwing his first incomplete pass. 

McMurry jumped out to an early 0-12 lead on a 2-yard run, a 30-yard field goal, and a safety all in the first quarter. 

Howard Payne got on the board on a 30-yard field goal by Nathan Gilbert with 14:25 to play in the second quarter, 3-12 McM. The Jackets scored two posessions later on a 8-yard Zach McGuire run with 5:38 left in the first half. The drive took 9 plays covering 74 yards and taking 4:03 off the clock. 

On the next possession McMurry scored on a 55-yard run, but the Yellow Jackets answered right back. With 13 seconds left before the half Tre Mason scored on an 8-yard pass from Zach Hubbard capping a 9-play 74-yard drive.17-19 McMurry at the half. 

The third quarter was a scoring outburst for Howard Payne scoring three TD's. Two were TD passes to Tre Mason of 41 and 5 yards and the last was a 1-yrad run by QB Hubbard. McMurry added two TD's, but HPU led at the end of the 3rd quarter 38-33. 

The HPU defense buckled down and held McMurry scoreless to closeout the game. The Jackets did add another TD on a 30-yard Zach McGuire run with 1:58 to play in the game and secure the 45-33 victory. 

McGuire had 12 carries for 61 yards for the Yellow Jackets and Edward Cody caught 5 passes for 80 yards. Aaron J. Alvarado and Kevin Reyna had 9 tackles each for the Jackets. Demetrius Cody had 8 tackles, 3.5 for loss, 1 INT, 2 pass breakups, and 1.5 sacks in the game. Dustin McClure had 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the game. 

The Jackets improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in ASC action, while McMurry falls to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in ASC play. 

The Yellow Jackets will be back at home next week taking on Hardin-Simmons University in Gordon Wood Stadium.
