HPU Dominated By HSU

Jake Dezell (#20) records 14 total tackles versus HSU

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jacket defense gives up 692 yards of total offense to the Cowboys of Hardin-Simmons University and fall 13-60 at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon. 

Hardin-Simmons scored three times in the first quarter two on runs by Derrick Grant and Steven Rockwell and one TD reception from Justin Feaster to Mychal Carrillo. 

A Rockwell TD run and a Feaster TD pass in the second quarter brought the Cowboys to a 33-0 lead with 8:03 remaining in the second quarter. 

Howard Payne got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard pass from Zach Hubbard to Tre Mason. The TD capped an eight play, 60 yard drive that took 2:33 off the clock. The Nate Gilbert extra point kick was blocked making the score 6-33 HSU. 

HSU added three more scores before the Jackets would find the endzone again on a 9-yard pass from Hubbard to Trevor Kleine. It was a ten play, 61-yard drive to make the score 13-53 HSU with 3:46 left in the third quarter. 

HSU added one more TD run with 13:38 to play in the game to bring the score to its final result 13-60 Hardin-Simmons. 

Of the 692 yards of offense for HSU 499 was in the running game. HSU had two running backs rush for over 100 yards in the game, Steven Rockwell with 178 yards and 3 TD's and Derrick Grant with 126 and 2 TD's. 

HPU was led by Zach Hubbard with 51 rushing and 230 yards passing on 33 of 46 passing. Cody Hambrick had 5 catches for 66 yards and Tre Mason had 5 catches for 43 yards and one TD. 

HPU Jake Dezell led all tacklers with 14 total tackles (2 solo). Cole Tarlton and B.K. Medlock had 10 and 9 tackles respectively. 

The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in ASC action, while HSU improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in ASC play. 

The Jackets will take on Louisiana College next week in Pineville, LA.
