Yellow Jackets Fall To Choctaws

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne football team gave up 368 yards rushing in a 14-39 loss to Mississippi College in American Southwest Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Mississippi College's Desmond Mays rushed for 206 yards and 3 TD's to account for over 1/3 of MC total offense.

Tre Mason got the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard first with a 2-yard run with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter. The TD capped a 12 play, 60-yard drive for HPU.

The Choctaws scored on the next possession on a Desmond Mays 2 yd run (Kyle Kruse kick) with 13:41 left in the 2nd, MC 7 - HPU 7. A Desmond Mays 9 yd run (Kyle Kruse kick) with less that a minute left in the 2nd brought the score to MC 14 - HPU 7 at the half.

The Choataws added two more TD's in the second half and a Brannon Walls 56 yd field goal, MC 30 - HPU 7.

With 09:48 left in the game Tre Mason out ran the MC cornerback for an 86 yd TD pass from Johnathon Haddock (Nate Gilbert kick), bring the score to its final, MC 30 - HPU 14.

HPU QB Zach Hubbard was 13 of 21 passing for 96 yards with 3 INT. Jonathon Haddock saw playing time in the second half and was 6 of 17 for 158 yards. WR Tre Mason had 6 catches for 158 yards and 1 TD (1 rushing). 

LB Jake Dezell recorded 13 tackles with Ronald Wright adding 12 with an INT.

MC improves to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in ASC action, while HPU falls to 2-6 on the season and 1-5 in ASC play.

The Jackets will travel to  Belton, Texas next Saturday to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor.
