Jackets Fall In Season Finale

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets scored first but came up short in the end 21-35 to visiting East Texas Baptist University in the 2008 season finale at Gordon Wood Stadium. 

ETBU rushed for 254 yards in the game but only passed for 65 yards. HPU rushed for 80 yards and threw for 244 yards passing between QB's Johnathon Haddock and Zach Hubbard. 

The Howard Payne defense kept the ETBU running game in check in the first quarter. The Jackets scored first on a 12-yard TD pass from Johnathon Haddock to Trevor Kleine with 13:45 left in the second quarter. The TD capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive that took 4:48 off the clock. 

ETBU scored next on a 1-yard run by Corey George. HPU put together another great drive just before the half and scored on a 18-yard TD pass from Zach Hubbard to Tre Mason with 2:44 to play in the first half. 

ETBU's Frazier took the kickoff and returned it 62 yards for a TD (Hardorth kick failed). 14-13 HPU with 2:30 left in the second. 

ETBU held HPU on their next possession and was able to drive and score again with under a minute remaining in the half. The two point conversion was good, 14-21 ETBU at the half. 

ETBU recovered an HPU fumble and returned it for a TD with 9:52 left in the third. ETBU also scored on a 17-yard run with 4:14 left in the third. 14-35 ETBU. 

HPU was able to scored in the third on a 59-yard TD pass from Zach Hubbard to Tre Mason. 21-35 ETBU. Zach Hubbard was 13 of 24 passing, 2 TD's, and 1 INT, he also ran for 54 yards. The HPU defense was able to hold ETBU in the fourth, but the Jackets' attempts to score came up short resulting in the 21-35 final. 

Jair Stover led ETBU with 23 carries for 156 yards. George has 86 yards and three TD's. Brandon Stumon recorded 15 tackles. 

HPU's Tre Mason caught 5 passes for 114 yards with 2 TD's. B.K. Medlock and Kevin Medlock had 11 tackles each for the Jackets. Reyna added 3 tackles for loss. 

The Jackets finish the season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in ASC play. ETBU finishes the season at 5-5, 5-3 in ASC action.
