Conference Win Streak Now At 27 Straight

Hope Hoherts (#40) had a game high 19 points against Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – The 12th ranked Howard Payne Lady Jackets outlasted Sul Ross State University 63-52 in American Southwest Conference action at the Gallego Center. In the process HPU extended their conference winning streak to 27 games. 

The Lady Jackets were able to gain a quick 5-0 lead. HPU lead by as much as 10 in the first, letting it slip slightly but still held a 31-25 halftime advantage. 

HPU only shot 36% from the field in the first half holding Sul Ross to the same. The Lady Jackets out-rebounded Sul Ross 20-15 in the half. 

A fastbreak layup by Brittany Zamora with 10 minutes to play in the game made the score 51-39 HPU. The 12 point lead for HPU was sparked by back to back three pointers by Kelsey Miller

A Sul Ross rally toward the end of the half came up short and HPU secured the 63-52 victory. HPU out-rebounded Sul Ross 40 to 30 in the game. 

Sul Ross was led by Isela Garza with 14 points and 6 assists, she was perfect from the field (5 of 5) and from behind the arc (4 of 4). 

Hope Hohertz led the Lady Jackets with a game-high 19 points and 6 rebounds. Brittany Zamora had 8 points. Kelsey Miller and Elaine Hobbs had 6 rebounds each, Hobbs also added a game high 4 steals. 

The Lady Jackets improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in ASC action, while Sul Ross falls to 0-3 and 0-1 in ASC play. 

Howard Payne will play next in their season home opener on Saturday at 1:00 pm against ASC opponent LeTourneau University.
