HPU Falls In Double Header To Univ. of Dallas

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas Crusaders defeated the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets 7-4 in the first game and 5-4 in game two of a double-header on Saturday afternoon.

The HPU losses breaks a 6-game win streak for the Jackets over UD.

UD got on the board first by scoring 3 runs in the first inning. HPU did not post a score on the board till the top of the fourth inning. Jackets added runs in the fifth (1) and sixth innings (2). But the Jackets could not keep UD from crossing the plate allowing 4 runs over the same span.

HPU's Logan Nelson received the loss for the Jackets in the game pitching 4 1/3 innings. Nelson struck-out 2 giving up 7 hits and walking one. UD' Scott Crisp won one game by pitching 5 2/3 innings. Viron Hackney picked up the save in pitching 1 1/3 innings.

Chris Pucci and Blake Shaffer both went 2 of 4 in the game, Shaffer adding 2 RBI. James Mays at DH went 2 of 3 with a RBI.

UD won the second game of the double header against Howard Payne, 5-4. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs to start off the game, then the Crusaders struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning, for the 2 run lead.

After the Jackets scored 4 runs in the first and fifth innings (2 per frame), UD scored their fifth run in the bottom of the third. UD pitcher Phillip Carkhuff finished the seventh inning by striking out all 3 batters to pick up the complete game win.

Billy Ray Cruz was credited with the loss for the Jackets. No Jacket had more than one hit with Taylor Zambreski and Cale Thompson driving in 2 runs each.

The Jackets will play next at home, Tuesday at Don Shepard Park against Southwestern University starting at 2:00 pm.
