No Win In Alpine For HPU

ALPINE, Texas – Howard Payne Yellow Jackets turnovers lead to a 0-17 loss to Sul Ross State University in American Southwest Conference action at Jackson Field. 

After a Howard Payne fumble on their 8-yard line, Sul Ross State scored on a 4-yard run by Nelson Veliz. The score 0-7 SRSU with 13:27 to play in the first quarter. 

Sul Ross added a 19-yard field goal with :02 second to play in the first half capping a 6 play 45-yard drive. 0-10 SRSU at the half. 

Turnovers were the big issue for both teams in the game with Sul Ross State having 1 interception and two fumbles loss and Howard Payne with four fumbles lost and three interceptions. 

Neither team scored again till the 3:09 mark of the 4th quarter on a 1-yard run by Sul Ross quarterback Monte Moreles. 0-17 SRSU 

Cody McKenzie lead Howard Payne with 66 yards on 12 carries, while Zach Hubbard was 13 of 31 passing for 97 yards and 3 INT. 

Lorenzo Green led the HPU defense with 10 tackles followed by Chase Reneau and Dustin McClure with 9 tackles each. 

Sul Ross' Swearington rushed for 177 yards on 24 carries. SR QB Moreles was 13 of 25 passing for 133 yards and 1 INT. 

The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-2, 0-1 in ASC, while Sul Ross State improve to 2-2, 1-1 ASC action.
Howard Payne will play next week at home versus Texas Lutheran University. The 2:00 pm start will be Howard Payne's Homecoming game.
