42 Game Home Win Streak Ends

Hope Hohertz (#40) had 11 points and 11 rebounds against UMHB

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Lady Jackets lose a heart breaker 56-59 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to end their 42 game home winning streak on Saturday at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Howard Payne was first on the board with a Katy Sarem layup; this would be their only lead of the half. As the Lady Jackets struggled with their shots, UMHB took advantage of their struggle and outscored the Lady Jackets 17-6 in the first ten minutes of the game.

The Lady Jackets continued to fight and closed the gap and trailed 25-31 at the half.

At the start of the second half HPU jumped out and shortened the Lady Crusaders' lead to two. Both teams continued to battle it out on defense. At 8:53 in the half the Lady Jackets fell to a 10-point deficit 42-52. The Jackets then went on a 10-0 run.

With 3:38 left on the clock, Katy Sarem hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 52-52. Hope Hohertz then draws a foul and makes both free throws to give the Lady Jackets their first lead of the half. UMHB scrambles for a shot but HPU's defense tightened down. With a minute left UMHB's Mallory McAdams made two free throws to tie the game.

The Lady Jackets known for their heart dug deep and take back the lead. With two more made free throws the Crusaders tie it up once more. The score at 56-56 with less than ten seconds on the clock, the Crusaders drive down the court and Caitlin Barganier buried a three-pointer at the buzzer. HPU took the loss 56-59. The loss snapped HPU's 41 game home win streak, one of the nation's longest.

Katy Sarem and Hope Hohertz led the Lady Jackets with 12 and 11 points respectively. Hohertz also had a great game under the basket with 11 rebounds followed by Elaine Hobbs with 10. Tiffany Warner dished out 4 assists.

The Crusaders were led by Caitlin Barganier with 13 points and Landie Thompson with 11. Their top rebounder was Kellie Thomas with 9.

Howard Payne dropped to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in ASC play, while Mary Hardin-Baylor improved to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in ASC play.

The Lady Jackets will play their next game on the road against Hardin-Simmons on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
