ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets had trouble overcoming a 20-point first half deficit and fell to Hardin-Simmons 70-77 in the Mabee Complex Thursday night. 

Hardin-Simmons jumped out to an early 4-11 lead with 3 of 3 three-point shooting. The hot shooting continued for HSU as they extended their lead to 19-34 with 4:52 to play in the first half. The Cowgirls led at the halftime break 27-45. 

HSU shot 65% from the field and 8 of 11 from behind the three-point line in the first half. Molly Brawner was 5 of 5 from behind the arc in the half. 

The Lady Jackets started the second half with a 10-4 run and cut the HSU lead to 37-49 with 14:48 on the clock. A Brittany Zamora three-pointer with 8:05 left brought the Lady Jackets to within 5, 55-60. 

Elaine Hobbs made it a 3-point ball game with two free-throws with 6 minutes to play. HSU pushed their lead to 10 again, but HPU brought it back to 5, 64-69 with 2:00 remaining. An HSU three-pointer made it 8, 64-72 with 1:33 left. Howard Payne was unable to contain the HSU offense and the Cowgirls held on to win 70-77. 

HSU shot 54% from the field and 62% from behind the arc. Howard Payne only managed 40% from the field but forced 19 HSU turnovers. 

HSU was led by Mollie Brawner with 28 points on 7 of 9 shooting from behind the three-point line. Haylee Allen finished with 20 and Lindsey Newcombe had 16 points. L, Newcombe also added 11 rebounds and 6 blocks. 

The Lady Jackets were led by Elaine Hobbs with a career high 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Sarah Jockers had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Hope Hohertz added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Tiffany Warner followed with 6 assists. 

The Lady Jackets fall to 12-4 overall and 8-4 in ASC play while HSU improves to 12-3, 8-3 in ASC action. 

Howard Payne plays again on Saturday at McMurry, it will be a 3:00 pm start.
