Hope Hohertz scored a career high 25 points against McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team dropped a heartbreaker 50-61 to McMurry University in American Southwest Conference action at Kimbrell Arena. 

Howard Payne shot just 29% in the game and turned the ball over 29 times (20 in the first half). McMurry did not do much better at 37% and 22 turnovers. 

Neither team found the basket much in the first half. Both teams shot under 25% from the field in the first 15 minutes. McMurry was able to build a 10-point lead 9-19 with 5:07 left in the first. A Tiffany Warner layup with 3:29 brought the score to 14-21 McM. Shooting 34% from the floor McMurry held a 19-29 halftime lead. 

Howard Payne started the second with a 6-0 run, 25-29 McM. A Hope Hohertz three-point play made the score 35-36 McM with 13 minutes to play. Howard Payne later tied the game twice, but McMurry extended their lead to 7, 42-49 with 6 minutes to play. The Lady Jackets left it all on the floor but were unable to get back into the game and fell 50-61 to McMurry. 

McMurry was led by Ana Berthel with 16 points and 3 blocks. Allison Nelson had 11 and Dominique Brown added a game high 10 assists. 

Hope Hohertz led all scorers with a career high 25 points and 7 rebounds. Elaine Hobbs grabbed a game high 8 rebounds. 

McMurry, a team Howard Payne had defeated 4 times last season and 6 consecutive times, got their first win over HPU in two years. 

Howard Payne falls to 12-5 overall, 8-5 in ASC play, while McMurry improves to 13-3, 10-2 in ASC action.
HPU will be on the road next Thursday at Schreiner University at 5:30 pm.
