Lady Jackets Win Close One Over TLU

Hope Hoherts (#40) had a game high 24 points against Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were down by 16 points in the first half but came back in the second to defeated Texas Lutheran University 62-58 Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. 

Neither team put many points on the scoreboard in the opening minutes. With 14:04 in the first half a Katy Sarem layup gave HPU the 8-6 lead. Aggressive Texas Lutheran defense allowed the Lady Bulldogs to gain an 8-14 with 9:33 on the clock. TLU extended their lead to as much as 16 points but Howard Payne made a late push and TLU led 19-31 at the half. 

Howard Payne committed 17 first half turnovers but outrebounded TLU 19-14 in the half. 

Howard Payne came out strong to start the second half and cut the TLU lead to 32-37 with 14:46. A Hope Hohertz free-throw with 6:25 left in the game ties it at 46-46. Both teams exchanged leads from there. With :50 seconds remaining in game Brittany Zamora hit a three-pointer to give HPU the 58-56 lead. Two Hope Hohertz free-throws with 17 seconds and two more with 5 seconds left sealed the game for the Lady Jackets, 62-58. 

HPU committed 28 turnovers in the game but outrebounded TLU 46-31. The Lady Jackets were 20 of 30 from the free-throw line and TLU only had 9 attempts from the line hitting 6. 

Pearl Kafoa led Texas Lutheran with 12 points all in the first half. Tamisha Timpson also had 12 and Rebecca Valdez followed with 10. 

The Lady Jackets were led by Hope Hohertz with a game high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany Warner and Kelsey Miller each had 11 points. Miller and Elaine Hobbs added 7 rebounds each. 

Howard Payne improves to 14-5 overall and 10-5 in ASC, while TLU fell to 6-13, 4-11 in ASC action. 

Howard Payne will play at home next Thursday against Schreiner at 5:30 pm.
