Lady Jackets Drop Second Game Of The Year

TYLER, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were outrebounded 37-50 by the University of Texas – Tyler and recorded just their second loss of the season 58-61 in American Southwest Conference crossover action Thursday night. 

Howard Payne only had 11 free-throw attempts in the game to UT-Tyler's 22, which proved to be the difference in the game. 

Both teams battled back and forth in the first half with the scored tied four times and the lead changing three. UT-Tyler did secure a 23-26 halftime advantage. 

In a hard fought second half the Lady Jackets were unable to get to the free-throw line (5 of 6), while UT-Tyler hit 10 of 14 in the second period. 

Howard Payne held a 53-52 lead with 1:59 to play in the game on a jumper by Katy Sarem. A jumper and a three-pointer gave UTT a 53-57 lead with 1:06 to play. The Lady Jackets were unable to rally from there and fell 58-61. 

The Lady Jackets got 21 points from the bench to UTT's 0, but UTT had 20 second chance points to HPU's 6 in the game. 

UTT was led by Becky Taylor with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor was followed by Lindsay Eaton with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Melissa Thomas also had 16 points for UTT. 

Katy Sarem scored 14 points for Howard Payne and Hope Hohertz added 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Brittany Zamora followed with 9. 

The Lady Jackets fall to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in ASC play, while UTT improves to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in ASC action. 

Howard Payne will play at home next Thursday versus Concordia University Texas at 5:30 pm.
