Volleyball Loses In 5th Set To McMurry

ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne volleyball team fell 3-2 to McMurry University in American Southwest Conference action Tuesday night.

After dropping the first two sets 21-25 and 19-25, Howard Payne battled back to win sets three and four 25-23 and 25-23.

In the deciding fifth set, HPU got down early but was able to rally back to tie it at 8-8. McMurry when on a run and defeated the Lady Jackets 15-10 in the set and secured the match 3-2.

Amanda Gutierrez led HPU with 12 kills and 4 total blocks. DS Kristin Hammond finished with 26 digs followed by Amber Cantu-Curry with 23 digs. Cantu-Curry also had 16 assists.

Setter Amy Cardwell had 20 assists and Cathie Kilmartin had a solid game with 7 kills and a .333 attack pct.

Terah Brown led McMurry with 17 kills followed closely by Bennie Smith with 15.

The Lady Jackets fall to 7-11 overall and 5-5 in ASC play, while McMurry improves to 9-8 and 6-4 in ASC action.

Howard Payne will be in Seguin next Tuesday in ASC action against Texas Lutheran at 6:00 pm.
