Lady Jackets Secure ASC Tournament Spot With Win

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne Lady Jackets down by one at the half rallied back to defeat the Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls 65-48 Thursday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.

Each team took their turn holding the lead in the first half but neither team held a real advantage. With both teams only shooting 30% from the field, Howard Payne trailed by one at the half 22-23.

The Lady Jackets didn't waste anytime in the second half. In the first 1:15 the Jackets scored seven points, starting with Hohertz's three pointer 20 seconds in. After gaining the lead Howard Payne never gave it up again for the remainder of the game. The Lady Jackets outscored the Lady Cowgirls 22-9 in the last ten minutes. Shooting 56% from the floor in the second, the Lady Jackets secured the victory, 65-48.

HPU shot 71.4 percent from the free throw-line while HSU only shot 53.3 percent. The Lady Jackets had a total of 14 steals and forced Hardin Simmons into 20 turnovers.

Howard Payne's Hohertz had an outstanding game with 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals. Sarah Jockers had nine points and six rebounds and Elaine Hobbs added eight points and six rebounds.

Lindsey Newcombe led the Cowgirls with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Also contributing was Mollie Brawner and Kara Lotten both with ten points each.

With the win HPU secured a spot in the ASC tournament and sits in a second place tie with HSU with three games to play in the regular season. The Lady Jackets improve to 17-5 overall and 13-5 in ASC play while the Cowgirls fall to 17-5 overall and 13-5 in ASC play.

The Lady Jackets will close out their regular home season games with McMurry University on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
