Lady Jackets Get Huge Win Over McMurry

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team used 20 of 23 shooting from the free-throw line to secure a 62-58 win over McMurry University in American Southwest Conference action in the Brownwood Coliseum Saturday afternoon. 

The 87% free-throw shooting for Howard Payne was a major factor in the game as McMurry was only 19 of 27 (70%) from the free-throw line and 1 of 9 from the three-point line for the game. 

Despite the Lady Jackets starting the game with an 8-0 run the game was close throughout the first half with 5 ties and 4 lead changes. Howard Payne held a 25-24 halftime lead. 

Howard Payne started the second the same as the first with an 8-0 run, 33-24 with 14:54 to play. McMurry from then went on a 10-0 run to take the lead 33-34 with 11:53 to play. Back to back three-pointers by Brittany Zamora and Elaine Hobbs gave HPU a 5-point lead just a minute later. 

McMurry cut the HPU lead to 1, 51-50 with 2:10 to play on an Amber Horton jumper. HPU outscored McMurry 11-4 in the closing minutes spurred by solid defense and key free-throws. The Lady Jackets won 62-54. 

McMurry was led by Anna Berthel with a game-high 23 points. Ashley Stephens added 10 points and Dominique Brown had 5 assists. 

Brittany Zamora came off the bench and led HPU with 15 points and 4 assists. Zamora was 4 of 5 from the field and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. Katy Sarem 13 points and 5 steals. Elaine Hobbs had 7 points and led in rebounds with 10. Hobbs also added 4 steals. 

Howard Payne improves to 18-5 overall and 14-5 in ASC action, while McMurry falls to 18-5 overall and 15-4 in ASC play. 

The Lady Jackets travel to Austin to take on Concordia on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
