HPU Gets Win And Now On To ASC Tournament

Sarah Jockers finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds against UMHB

BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team closed out the regular season with a 63-54 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon at the Mayborn Center. The Lady Jackets will play next Friday in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference tournament. Howard Payne will take on Mississippi College at 5:30 pm at Kimbrell Arena at McMurry in Abilene.

Neither team shot well from the floor in the first half with Howard Payne at 30% and Mary Hardin-Baylor at 29%. The Lady Jackets held a 23-22 halftime advantage. 

Howard Payne came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half outscoring UMHB 13-5. HPU led 36-29 with 14:12 on a Sarah Jockers layup. 

A Katy Sarem three-pointer with 12:57 left gave the Lady Jackets a 10-point lead, 41-31. Three consecutive UMHB three-pointers brought them within 3, 45-42 with 7:55 left. It remained about the same the till the end of the game and with an Elaine Hobbs three-point play with under a minute to play the Lady Jackets sealed the win 63-54. 

Howard Payne out-rebounded UMHB 41-31 and shot 91% (21 of 23) from the free-throw line. UMHB only managed 31% shooting for the game and 4 of 21 (19%) from the behind the arc. 

Kallie White led UMHB with 12 points followed by Stacie Urbina with 10. 

Howard Payne was led by Hope Hohertz with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Katy Sarem had 11 and Sarah Jockers added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Elaine Hobbs had 9 points and 4 assists. 

Howard Payne improves to 20-5 overall and 16-5 in ASC play, while UMHB falls to 13-12, 12-9 in ASC action. 

The Lady Jackets will play next Friday in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference tournament. The opponent and time will be officially announced on Sunday.
