Jackets Land DH Wins Over Concordia

AUSTIN, Texas- After a weekend of cold rainy weather pushed back the start the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets defeated Concordia University Texas 4-2 and 6-5 in an American Southwest Conference double-header Sunday afternoon.

Concordia (11-10, 1-4 ASC) had a hard time putting runs on the board as Howard Payne (10-10, 3-2 ASC) jumped to an early 2-0 lead. Howard Payne's pitching proved to be too much for the Tornados as they were able to hold the two run lead adding two in the top of the 7th for a 4-2 win. 

Billy Ray Cruz got the complete game win for HPU giving up two runs on eight hits and strikingout five. Matt Coburn pitched game one of the double header, striking out 9 for Concordia.

Game two of the double header Concordia started off with an early 3-0 lead. Howard Payne came back in the top of the 5th with three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Concordia errors gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead in the top of the 6th. In the bottom of the 7th the Tornados answered with 2 runs.

The Tornados could not hold the 5-4 lead and lost 6-5 in extra innings. The Jackets tied the game in the top of the 8th. In the 10h, Nick Lloyd singled scoring Dustin Climer for the go ahead run.

Will Hood started the game for the Jackets and Jimmy May got the win in refief for HPU. CTX's Michael Johnson ended the night with 14 strikeouts in the start and Szkotak got the loss. 

The Jackets will play a single against Concordia on Monday then at home this next weekend against Texas Lutheran.
