HPU Gets 5th Set Win Over Concordia Texas

Amber Cantu-Curry had 12 kills, 4 services aces, and 24 assists in the win over Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne volleyball team defeated Concordia University Texas 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-26, 16-14) in a fifth set thriller Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference action.

Concordia Texas (CTX) started strong in the match by winning the first two sets.  However, Howard Payne (5-8, 3-2 ASC) battled back and used momentum to claim sets three and four, forcing a fifth set.

With the fifth set tied at 6-6, the Lady Jackets won five consecutive points and held an 11-6 advantage over CTX.  The Tornados would fight back after a 4-0 run and get within one point (10-11) on a service ace.  

With the fifth set again tied at 14-14. HPU completed the comeback win after scoring the next two on back-to-back CTX errors.

HPU's Tamika Heline led all with 18 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks. Amber Cantu-Curry had a great game with 12 kills, four service aces, and 24 assists. Amy Cardwell also had 24 assists in the match.

The Lady Jackets improve to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in ASC play, while Concordia falls to 1-10 overall, 0-5 in ASC action.

Howard Payne will play next at home versus Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday.
