Jackets Last Minute Goal Downs Ozarks

Luis Tamez scored the first goal for HPU to tie the game against Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - Howard Payne University overcame a second half deficit to pull out a 2-1 victory over the University of the Ozarks by netting the game-winning goal with one minute to play Saturday in American Southwest Conference action.

Saturday's match saw Howard Payne overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit as the Yellow Jackets scored both of their goals late. Ozark's Francisco Garza scored when he dribbled around a pair of defenders to his left and ripped one in lower right corner in the 28th minute.

The match remained 1-0 until the 82nd minute when Howard Payne's Luis Tamez scored the equalizer on an assist from Reese Lawson.

Just when it appeared the match was heading into overtime, Howard Payne took advantage of an Ozarks' misplayed ball and scored the game-winner in the waning moments. HPU's Lawson scored the game winner at the end of the 88th minute.

Kyle Huesing played all 90 minutes in goal for HPU recording two saves. Ozarks goalkeeper Neil Thompson had six saves, all coming in the second half.

HPU improves to 5-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in ASC play, while Ozarks stands at 3-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

Howard Payne will play next weekend at home versus Mississippi College and Louisiana College.
