Jackets Fall To UMHB

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team drops their eighth and ninth straight American Southwest Conference games in a double header against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Monday afternoon, 10-1 and 7-2.

In the first game, UMHB got out to the 5-0 lead after just two innings. HPU would grab it's one run in the bottom of the second, and would fail to score after that. The Cru would tack on one more run in the third, three runs in the forth, and one more in the sixth, making the final, 10-1.

Ray Rosales got the lone RBI for the Yellow Jackets on a sacrifice fly scoring Taylor Zambreski. Morgan Sloan, designated hitter for UMHB, went 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs.

Jared Hopper for UMHB got the win on the mound. He went five innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, striking out six batters. Will Hood for HPU, went six innings allowing nine hits and three earned runs, striking out four batters.

In the second game, UMHB again got out to an early 3-0 lead in the second. The Jackets answered back in the third, when Jordan Hammontree got a RBI single scoring Sam Dollahite, making the score 3-1. After that the game was deadlocked until the top of the ninth inning when UMHB scored four runs. HPU was only able to answer back with one more in the bottom of the inning making the final score, 7-2.

Dollahite was 1-2, scoring one run. Brian Cunningham, Hammontree, and Rosales had the other three hits for HPU. UMHB's Alfredo Melendez went 2-4 scoring two runs and knocking in a RBI.

Cameron Arnett for the Cru picked up the win. He threw eight innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs, striking out seven batters. Jonathan Morris got the loss for the Jackets, pitching eight innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five batters.

The Jackets go to 15-20 overall on the season, and 4-14 in the ASC. UMHB moves to 20-16 overall and 11-7 in the ASC.

The next game for the Jackets is at home in a non-conference double header against Huston-Tillotson University that starts at 1 p.m. April 20, at Don Shepard Park
