Jackets Hold Off Ozarks for 3-2 Win

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's soccer team held off a late surge by the University of the Ozarks to post a 3-2 American Southwest Conference win Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field.

Jaime Benitez got the Yellow Jackets started in the 16th minute when he scored on a free kick from 35 yards out.

Reese Lawson gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead when Peter Garrard found him with a through ball from the midfield in the 39th minute.
 
Shane Cazad then gave HPU the 3-0 lead just six minutes into the start of the second period scoring after splitting the Ozarks defense.

Ozarks' Travis Murnan scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Later a Logan Hornback header on a Guido Salas cross brought Ozarks to within one with 18 minutes to play in regulation.

Howard Payne keeper Kyle Huesing came up with some key saves in the end to help secure the 3-2 win for the Jackets.

Howard Payne is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Ozarks falls to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Jackets make a road trip to play Mississippi College on Thursday before traveling to Louisiana College on Saturday.
