Lady Jackets Win Season Opener 68-61

SHERMAN, Texas - Howard Payne University's Dana Marrs scores 16 in a 68-61 Lady Jacket victory over Austin College in the 2011-2012 season opener.

Howard Payne controlled the inside outrebounding Austin College 48-35 and outscoring them 30-18 in the paint. Howard Payne now stands at 1-0 on the year and Austin College falls to 0-2 overall.

The Lady Jackets started the game with a 9-0 run holding Austin College scoreless in the first four minutes. AC battled back to take the lead 22-18 with 5:45 left in the half.

From there, HPU outscored AC 14-5 to take a 32-27 halftime lead. The Lady Jackets were 1 of 10 from behind the arc in the first half and Austin College was 5 of 11 keeping them in the game.

The Lady Jackets quickly extended their lead to 11 at the start of the second on a Roshonda Gayden jumper with 16:41 on the clock. 

It stayed about the same till HPU put together another run and pushed their lead to 19. A Dana Marrs jumper with 3:13 left gave HPU a 66-47 lead. Marrs finished with a game high 16 points.

Marrs added six rebounds to her 16 points. She was followed by Brittany Roberson with 12 points and three assists. Gayden finished with eight points and a team high seven rebounds.

Austin College was led by Brooke Melton and Allison Taylor with 16 points each. Melton also had a game high 11 rebounds. Shayna Clardy added 12 points.

Howard Payne will take on Ferrum College on Saturday, day two of the Austin College Tournament.
