Jackets Drop Game To TLU

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball gave up five runs in the final two innings to fall to Texas Lutheran University 7-5 in American Southwest Conference action Friday at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets committed five total errors, had 12 hits and left 10 runners on base. Texas Lutheran had seven hits and recorded three errors of their own.

Texas Lutheran scored two runs in the third off of two HPU errors. The Jackets then gained the lead after the sixth scoring three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The top of the eighth was the inning that hurt the Jackets with TLU scoring four runs on three errors. TLU added another run in the ninth to complete the 7-5 win.

Jonathan Morris got the loss for HPU throwing 7.2 innings. Corey Howie saw time in relief striking out one.

Sean Madden recorded the win for Texas Lutheran. Brad Orosey started for TLU with Chase Janecek and Kellen McGriff seeing time in relief. McGriff was credited with the save.

Jordan Hammontree and Taylor Zambreski were both 3 of 5 for the Jackets. Carlton Brown also added two hits.

Cody Miller and Isaac Tijerina had two hits each for Texas Lutheran.

The Jackets are now at 4-12 overall and 0-4 in ASC play. Texas Lutheran is 14-8 overall and 4-0 in conference. Both teams will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
