Jackets lose close one in pitchers duel

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University dropped their first American Southwest Conference game of the year 1-2 to LeTourneau University Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

It was a pitcher's duel, with both pitchers throwing the complete game for their teams.

Both teams scored a run in third for a 1-1 tie. Howard Payne got their run when Sam Dollahite stole home after Jordan Hammontree had struck out and LeTourneau had to throw him out at first on a pass ball.

The difference in the game for LeTu would be a ball in the dirt at home plate, allowing their Haydn Vaughan to score from third. That would break the tie of the game and put LeTourneau up on top for good.

HPU starting pitcher, Jonathan Morris, threw all nine innings striking out nine, and allowing two earned runs on six hits.

LeTourneau starting pitcher finished the game allowing only two hits, with 12 strikeouts and one earned run.

The HPU Jackets go to 2-6 on the year and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference play.

Howard Payne's plays a double-header starting at noon tomorrow at Don Shepard Park against LeTourneau University.
