Jackets win one, lose one

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team split their games Saturday afternoon with LeTourneau University, winning the first game 2-1 and losing the second 8-4.

In the first game, HPU won on a walk-off base hit by Carlton Brown scoring Kevin Young from third base that came with the bases loaded.

The seventh inning began with a Chase Holmes single, and would be followed by a series of two errors, and an intentional walk for Ryan Klose to load the bases. Sam Dollahite drove in the run to tie the game reaching on a fielders choice when the LeTourneu fielder was unsuccessful in getting Kris Kloc out at the plate.

Gilbert Barrera, HPU's starting pitcher got the win. Barrera threw a complete game and allowed only one earned run on four hits, striking out nine batters.

In the second game, a six-run seventh inning by LeTourneau would be the downfall of the Yellow Jackets.

After going down 2-0 after three innings, the Jackets scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game up after five. The first run came when Chase Holmes hit a single up the middle, scoring Taylor Zambreski from second base. In the fifth, Jordan Hammontree hit a triple into right center to score Alan Sailors.

LeTourneu would take control of the game in the top of the seventh when they strung together six runs off of four hits and three walks.

HPU would get back two runs in the bottom of the seventh and the ninth, but the damage was done, as LeTourneu took the game 8-4.

After their weekend series against LeTourneu, the Jackets go to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the American Southwest Conference. LeTourneu moves to 11-11 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Jackets next games will be in a weekend series in Austin against Concordia University Texas starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 11 for a single game, followed by a double header with a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday.
