Jackets Drop Game To HSU 10-5

#3 Jordan Hammontree was three of six with two RBIs

ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team found themselves down early to Hardin-Simmons University losing 10-5 Friday at Hunter Field.

A Hardin-Simmons five-run second inning put the game out of reach early for the HPU Yellow Jackets. HSU went on to add two in the third, one in the fifth, and two in the eighth.

Howard Payne got on the scoreboard in the fourth when catcher Ryan Abbott singled to right field bringing in Sam Dollahite from third base.

A Jordan Hammontree RBI single to right field scored Will Garlick from second in the sixth to make the score 8-2 Hardin-Simmons.

The eighth was big for the Jackets. Abbott started the inning with a double to right center. Hammontree repeated the hit doubling in Abbott for the score. A wild pitch and walks for Taylor Zambreski and Ben Butler loaded the bases with no ones.

Then a Carlton Brown fielder's choice scored Hammontree, Butler out at second. Reed Klose pinch hit and reached on an error by the first baseman to score Zambreski. Dollahite struck out swinging and then Dustin Cole grounded out to second to end the inning. 8-5 HSU.

A HSU triple, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth, sealed the 10-5 win for Hardin-Simmons.

Howard Payne recorded 13 hits but not when they needed it stranding 15 runners on base in the game.

Jonathan Morris(0-4) started for HPU throwing 2.1 innings. He gave up seven runs on six hits, walking four. Five other HPU pitchers saw action.

HSU's Sam Walker(5-2) was credited with the win throwing 6.2 innings. He struck out five and walked two giving up 2 runs on 11 hits.

Five Yellow Jackets recorded multiple hits in the game with Hammontree leading with three hits and 2 RBIs.

Howard Payne is now 8-15 overall and 4-6 in ASC play, while Hardin-Simmons stands at 21-6 overall and 8-2 in conference action.

Both teams will play a 1:00 pm double header on Saturday at Hunter Field.
