Women's Basketball Defeats HSU

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Jasmin Thomas had 19 points along with 8 rebounds and eight steals to lead Howard Payne University to a 75-69 win over Hardin-Simmons University in conference action Saturday afternoon.

It was the Howard Payne defensive pressure that was the difference in the game as the Lady Jackets forced 21 turnovers on 18 steals. Howard Payne outrebounded HSU 44-34. HPU was led by Jasmin Thomas with a team high 19 points, eight rebounds and a career high eight steals.

Howard Payne improves to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Hardin-Simmons falls to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in conference action.

The game remained close throughout the first half with the Lady Jackets maintaining around a five point lead. Howard Payne ended the half with a 9-2 run capped by a Kayla Scott three-pointer at the buzzer. HPU led 43-30 at the break.

The Lady Jackets pushed their lead to as much as 21 points midway through the second half. The HPU bench got some much needed action in the closing minute with the Lady Jackets securing the 85-79 win.

Brittany Roberson had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Lady Jackets. Roshonda Gayden added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

HSU was led by Angela Newcombe with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Alexis Popelar had 14 and Jasmine Lewis added 11.

Howard Payne will hit the road next week with a Thursday game at Texas Lutheran and Saturday at Schreiner.
