Softball Splits With Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team split a double header with Austin College 7-5 and 4-11 on Friday in non-conference action.

The double header with Austin College was orignally scheduled for last Saturday in Brownwood but was cancelled due to rain and moved to Sherman.

Game one had the Lady Jackets using huge 2nd and 5th innings to open up a 7-0 lead. Austin College would rally big in the bottom of the seventh to come within two, 7-5. Kayla Castillo would come in for the Lady Jackets to get the final out and secure the 7-5 win for HPU.

Haleigh Caraway and Kimble Luna each had two hits for the Lady Jackets. Caraway along with Katie Poerner recorded 2RBIs in the game. Baillie Trumble got the win and Castillo recorded the save for HPU.

In game two, Austin College used a nine-run bottom of the third and cruised to an 11-4 win over the Lady Jackets. Kayla Castillo got the loss for HPU throwing three full innings. Katie Poerner, Jessica Morales and Shandi Winstead each had two hits for HPU.

Howard Payne stands at 2-2 overall on the year and will play in the University of Dallas tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
