Lady Jackets Turnover Concordia

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team used 31 Concordia University Texas turnovers and a career high 15 points from Britani Gattis to down the Tornados 79-64 Saturday afternoon.

In the teams last meeting, it was Concordia that forced 31 HPU turnovers but it was the Lady Jackets that stepped up the defensive pressure returning the favor. Howard Payne converted the 31 Concordia turnovers into 23 points.

Howard Payne moves again into a first place tie with Concordia in the ASC West Division standings with a recorded 18-3 overall and 14-3 in conference play. Concordia falls to 16-4 overall and 14-3 in conference.

Concordia that jumped out to an early 6-2 lead to start the game. Two Roshonda Gayden free-throws with 15:15 left in the first half gave HPU a 9-8 lead. From there the Lady Jackets would go on a 15-4 run to extend their lead to 12, 24-12. Howard Payne capped the first half with a 10-0 run to hold a 41-26 halftime advantage.

After Concordia cut the HPU lead to nine early in the second, the Lady Jackets would again extend their lead this time to 21 with 11:09 left in the game. Kayla Scott hit one of her four three-pointers on the night to give HPU the 61-40 lead midway through the second half.

HPU was led by Britani Gattis with a career high 15 points off the bench. Gattis was 5 of 8 from the field, 4 of 6 from behind the arc in the game. Brittany Roberson and Kayla Scott each followed with 12. Roberson also grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Roshonda Gayden added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shamika Singleton had 15 points and a game high 10 rebounds for Concordia. Lashanda Luckey added 10 points off the bench.

Howard Payne will continue their home stand next week with Texas Lutheran on Thursday (Pink Out) and Schreiner (Senior Night) on Saturday.
