Jacket Baseball Wins 8-1

BELTON, Texas - Howard Payne University used a pair of late three-run innings to defeat the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 Friday in conference action.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference West with the victory. The loss drops UMHB to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in ASC West Division play. 

UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when the Yellow Jackets walked in a run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. HPU was able to get out of the inning after a UMHB strikeout and pop-out. Howard Payne would tie the game in the top of the fifth on Kris Kloc's solo homer and then took a 2-1 lead when Jordan Hammontree walked with the bases loaded. The Yellow Jackets broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh, with Hammontree's two-run double being the biggest hit. Howard Payne added three more in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.

 Corey Howie earned the win for Howard Payne to move to 1-2 and Carlton Brown notched the save with three innings of scoreless. Sam Dollahite, Carlton Brown, Colton Buzzard and Alan Sailors had two hits apiece for HPU and Hammontree drove in three runs in the game.

The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field.
