Jacket Baseball Wins Season Opener

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team recorded two wins over the University of Dallas 4-3 and 8-3, to open the Yellow Jackets 2013 season Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

In game one, both teams remained scoreless till the bottom of the fourth when the Jackets took a 2-0 lead. UDallas answered with three runs in the top of the next inning to take a 3-2 advantage. The Jackets would tie it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning.

The score stayed knotted at 3-3 till the bottom of the seventh when Sam Dollahite singled home Dusty Taylor, who had doubled to start the inning, for the 4-3 victory.

Corey Howie got the complete game win for HPU striking out four and walking none. Howie gave up three runs on five hits with no earned runs. Brian Donley recorded the loss for UDallas.

Jake Sadler had two hits and Houston Holmes drove in two runs.

In game two, the Jackets took a 6-2 lead after three innings and never looked back. HPU added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 8-3 win.

Gilbert Barrera got the win for the Jackets throwing five innings striking out six and walking three. Barrera gave up three runs on four hits with one earned run. Kurt Doerries got the loss for UDallas.

Kyle Kulczyk and Alan Sailors each had two hits for the Jackets. Sailors also drove in two runs.

Howard Payne is now 2-0 to start the season. UDallas falls to 0-5 on the year. The Jackets will have a home series with Jarvis Christian College this weekend, single game on Friday at 1:00 pm and a double header on Saturday at noon.
